Most “broken” lamps need a socket, a cord, or a harp — not a landfill. What our Daytona Beach repair bench can fix, what drives the cost, and what to bring when you stop in.
A lamp that won't turn on almost never needs to be replaced. In nearly five decades on South Nova Road we've watched people carry perfectly good lamps to the curb over a two-dollar part — a worn socket, a cracked cord, a switch that finally gave up after twenty years of being clicked. The lamp is fine. The hardware inside it is not.
Here's what actually breaks, what our repair bench can bring back, what drives the cost of a repair, and what to bring with you when you stop in.
Ninety percent of the lamps that come across our bench fail in one of three places, and none of them are the lamp itself.
The socket is the part that takes the bulb, and the switch is usually built into it. Every click wears the contacts a little. Eventually the lamp flickers when you nudge it, works only in one position, or stops responding altogether. If your lamp comes on when you jiggle the bulb, the socket is telling you it's done. A socket is a stocked part and a straightforward swap — and it's the single most common repair we do.
Cords fail at the two points where they bend most: right where the cord leaves the lamp base, and right at the plug. Vacuum cleaners, rolling chairs, and pets do the rest. Any cord with exposed copper, a cracked jacket, a warm plug, or a scorch mark should be taken out of service today, not next month. Rewiring a lamp end to end — new cord, new plug, new socket — is a standard job here, and it's what turns a fire risk back into a lamp.
The wire frame that holds your shade is a harp, and the little knob on top is a finial. Harps bend, finials get lost in moves, and shade rings get separated from the shades they belong to. A shade that sits crooked, too high, or too low is usually a harp problem, not a shade problem. Harps come in specific heights, which is exactly why it's worth bringing the shade with you rather than guessing.
Fixtures are works of art with a lot of mechanical and electrical complexity hiding inside them. We diagnose the actual problem rather than swapping parts until something works, because a fast fix with poor craftsmanship just sends the lamp back to us in six months.
We would rather send you home with a straight answer than a repair that isn't worth doing. A few situations where we'll say so:

We don't quote lamp repair by the piece, because the same-looking lamp can be a ten-minute job or a two-week job. What moves the number is straightforward, and you can usually estimate it yourself before you walk in:
The comparison worth making is not repair-versus-nothing — it's repair versus buying the same lamp again. For a lamp you actually like, that has a shade you already own, in a finish that already matches the room, the math usually isn't close. For a fixture bought on sale three years ago that you were never attached to, we'll tell you that too. The single biggest cause of a second trip is showing up with only half the lamp. Before you drive over:
Ask yourself three questions. If you answer yes to two of them, repair is almost always the right call.
And if the answer is no across the board — that's fine. You're already standing in a showroom with thousands of fixtures lit and hanging, which is a considerably better way to choose a replacement than scrolling photographs of one.
It depends on how many sockets the lamp has, whether the parts are stocked or have to be sourced, and whether it needs a single component replaced or a full rewire. A standard single-socket table lamp with a stocked part is at the low end; a multi-arm chandelier needing period-correct hardware is at the high end. We look at the lamp and tell you before we start — and if it isn't worth repairing, we'll say that instead.
Almost always, yes. Table lamps are the most commonly repaired item on our bench, and the usual failure — a worn socket or switch — is one of the most straightforward fixes there is. Cracked ceramic bodies and sealed integrated-LED units are the main exceptions.
Replacing a socket or a cord is within reach for someone comfortable with basic wiring, and hardware stores sell kits for exactly that. Two cautions. First, the ground and the polarity have to be right — a lamp wired backwards will light up perfectly and still leave the shell of the socket energized. Second, antique lamps often use non-standard threads and sizes, and forcing a modern part into an old fitting is how good lamps get ruined. If it's valuable, sentimental, or older than you are, let a bench handle it.
An electrician works on the wiring in your walls. A portable lamp — anything with a plug — is a different trade, and most electricians will tell you the same thing. A lamp shop keeps sockets, harps, finials, cord in multiple colors and gauges, and specialty bulbs on the shelf, along with the experience to match a part to a fixture that was made before those parts were standardized. For anything hardwired into the ceiling, though, an installer is exactly right — and that's a service we offer as well.
